Indigenous people
Sherpa are the
indigenous people of the Himalayas who live in north-eastern part of Nepal, in
the valleys of the Himalayas. Today, there are approximately 40,000 Sherpas and
most live near the tallest mountain in the world, Mt Everest.
Sherpa came from the country of Tibet to Nepal in the early 16th century. They are still like the Tibet people as they exhibit customs and wear similar clothing to these people. Also most of these people are Tibetan Buddhists. They have no written language and they worship the Himalayas a lot as they view them as there gods. For example, Mt Everest is known as Chomolungma which means the ‘mother of gods’.
Over the years, the Sherpas have been admired for their physical strength, able to breathe less oxygen and work at higher altitudes. These people don’t rely on modern transport that we use such as cars.
Today, these people are known for helping mountaineers up Mount Everest and other mountains in the Himalayas. The Sherpas have made a great income out of this and now are starting to operate hotel and lodges for tourists and also help mountaineers up Mount Everest and the other mountains in the Himalayas. Climbers pay around $60,000 for an expedition, where Sherpas earn more than $2,000 each trip.
The tourist industry has made the Sherpas life a lot easier. Many have adapted to this change and a western life. But some of them live as their ancestors did many centuries ago.
