Characteristics
FORMATION
The Himalayas were formed about 70 million years ago when there was movement in the Australian and Euarasion tectonic plates. The Himalayas are the world's youngest mountain range.
EARTHQUAKES
The Himalayas has countless earthquakes and tremors throughout the regions where the Himalayas are. Due to these earthquakes and tremors the mountains move and grow continuously.
CLIMATE
Though the Himalayas are renowed for its snow-covered peaks, the word Himalaya means "adobe (a place, residence) of snow", the climate of the Himalaya's changes regularly. Tropical-type conditions are found at the base of the Himalayas whlist the peaks can be covered with ice and snow.
FAUNA AND FLORA
Changes in climate means that different species of fauna and flora can be found on this mountain range. Fauna found in the Himalayas are such as goats, rhinoceroses, bison and elephants. Tea plant and scrub type plants are flora which is found in the Himalayas.
GEOGRAPHY, GEOLOGY and RECORDS
Nine of the 10 highest peaks in the world are located in this mountain range. These include Mount Everest, Mount Godwin Austin (K2) and Kanchanjunga. Three of the world's major river system originated formed in the Himalayans. Also the mountains formed a curve from west to east.
