SAVING THE HIMALAYAS
There are many environmental issues involved with the Himalayas mountain range.
One of the major problems with the Himalayas is deforestation. Most of the trees in the Sub- Himalayas region has been cut down so that they can have more land and can lumber the wood. Even in the Middle Himalayas region has most of the accessible trees cut down. Due to this deforestation, other environmental problems have arised within the Himalayas. The destruction rate of these forests surrounding the Himalayas is increasing due to the fact that there is more demand for firewood in some areas, trees need to be trimmed to feed livestock, and the construction of roads on the border regions.
Overpopulation is the other big environmental problem within the Himalayas. Nearly 40 million people inhabit the Himalayas. Population and ecomonic patterns are just some of the things that have greatly influenced the varitions in topography and climate, which has impose harsher living conditions within the Himalayas. This has also restricted movement and communication.
There is currently an increase in the amount of pollution, which has been caused by the accelerating population. Himalayan streams that once were clear water and now fill with refuse and sewage. Hill people who use the water for drinking are now suffering from dysentery (inflammatory of the lower intestine). Also they are being diagonosed with other dieases due to this pollution in the water. Also large lakes like Dal in Kashmir and Naini Lake (Nainital) have also become polluted.
This is just some of the many environmental problems in the Himalayas. People need to be educated so that we don't lose this very important icon of the world.
